Relationship Marketing for New Customers
By Mark KaplanRelationship Marketing is the evolution from Traditional Marketing. In the past we used to blast the media with newspaper and direct mail offering our goods and services at sale prices. The offers usually had
expiration dates and we put the pressure on to act now.
The internet and Google changed our buying and information seeking habits. It opened the door to getting what we need from almost anywhere in the world. We no longer had to rely on the home town supplier. We can still search local, but what we need might be better serviced by National suppliers who can serve local.
They also changed the relationship between supplier and customer. Now buyers enter a buying cycle where they have time to find the information they need to make a wise decision. Then they can decide on which provider most serves their desire for competence and character. In the Spend Shift, John Gerzema claims we have even changed our standards to support businesses that treat their employees, customers and environment with respect.
Social Media has made it possible for customers to have a much more peer relationship with the businesses they support. They can interact with questions, support and even criticism on Face Book, Twitter, and numerous other sites where the public informs the public of companies worthy of support.
How should you interact now? Intelligent communications includes giving away your expertise so your targets can learn from you and get a feel for who you are. You can write posts to give personal insights and articles or white papers to give technical information. Invite your audience to interact with phone calls or email. Get into their buying cycle and allow them all the time they need to collect information and find a supplier who fills their needs and with whom they can relate.
