Finding Your Target Market with Keywords
ByVery few people or providers can serve the entire breadth of the market because there is too much
segmentation. That is what the internet has created. That is the reason for the long tail domain name. There is no longer just chocolate or vanilla, there are 31 flavors and more.
Everyone can have almost anything they want and find the right provider. If their provider is not local, than maybe their provider is located across the country or in another country. So, no use trying appeal to everyone. Find the segment of the market that is best served by your Unique Selling Proposition.
Which segment of the market are you best set up to serve and in which are you most competitive? You can’t compete with Federal Express for over night mail, but you might be the best local delivery for bulk items. You can’t compete with Foster Farms for volume chicken deliveries but you might be the best source for grass fed, no hormones or anti biotic fresh chickens.
The smaller you are, the longer tail or narrower the niche you want to start with in your appeal. When I worked with Freight Shipping distributors, they might not be able to compete on a national level, but if their domain was Auto Parts Mid West or Ford Auto Parts Chicago, they could get to page one Google easier the more words they added to their domain.
Once they had traffic, they developed credibility with Google and could spread out their influence by creating content with more universal words in the page or blog titles like just saying Ford Auto Parts. Aim for the segment you can best serve because these are the people you want and to whom your sales pitch will most appeal.
